Spring Valley Golf Club mourns the passing of one of its most distinguished and respected members, Richard “Dick” Kirby OAM, who passed away aged 88.

A Life Member of the Club, Dick’s remarkable association with Spring Valley spanned 70 years, having joined on 30 November 1955. His lifelong dedication to the Club and to the game of golf more broadly leaves a legacy that is both profound and enduring.

Dick served Spring Valley with distinction across numerous leadership roles, including as President from 1978 to 1981, Treasurer from 1970 to 1975, and Vice-President from 1975 to 1978. His commitment to the Club extended well beyond administration, with a strong presence on the course. He was the Junior Champion in 1958 and claimed the Mixed Foursomes Championship in 1962 alongside his mother-in-law.

A proud pennant representative, Dick’s involvement began in 1956 and included being part of Spring Valley’s inaugural VGA pennant team in 1958. His contribution to pennant golf continued for more than six decades, reflecting his deep passion for the game and for the Club.

In recognition of his extraordinary service, Dick was awarded Life Membership of Spring Valley Golf Club in 2007.

Beyond Spring Valley, Dick’s influence on the game was significant at both state and national levels. He served as Treasurer and later President of the Victorian Golf Association and went on to become Vice-President of the Australian Golf Union (now Golf Australia).

Dick also dedicated many years to the Golf Society of Australia, serving as Treasurer and being awarded Life Membership in 2020.

His service to golf was acknowledged at the highest level in 2023 when he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honours. Later that year, he was inducted into the Victorian Golf Industry Hall of Fame, one of the sport’s most prestigious honours, with only a small number of individuals recognised since its inception.

Dick’s legacy also lives on through his family, with his son Andrew continuing the Kirby name in golf administration, notably serving as Club Captain at Royal Melbourne Golf Club during the 2019 Presidents Cup.

Richard “Dick” Kirby will be remembered not only for his extraordinary contributions to golf, but also for his character, generosity, and unwavering commitment to Spring Valley Golf Club.

The Club extends its deepest condolences to Dick’s family and friends.

Funeral details will be provided as soon as details are available.
