40 Years at Spring Valley Golf Club

Today we proudly celebrate Chris Fischer, affectionately known as “Fish,” on reaching 40 years of membership at Spring Valley Golf Club. A keen morning golfer, Chris is often first off the tee on Wednesdays and Saturdays, tackling the course early to start the day on a positive note.

Chris discovered Spring Valley through his love of cricket, playing with three friends who were already members. After a single visit to the course, he was so impressed he submitted his nomination papers and joined the waiting list within a week. Being a cricketer, Chris took naturally to golf, but he wasn’t in a hurry to conquer the game. He savoured every milestone, culminating in a long-awaited hole-in-one on 16 November 2019, 34 years after joining. That memorable moment, shared with his good friend Peter Anderson, finally silenced decades of friendly ribbing from mates John Carlson, Nick Vendetti, Greg Ebinger, and even our President, Steve.

A true clubman, Chris has always valued camaraderie as much as competition. While he has made quarter and semi-finals in individual and pairs events, he rates himself as a true clubman and lets others shine in “Gold Letter” competitions. His own achievements include winning the Presidents Trophy in 2011, reaching A & B grade finals in consecutive years, claiming a Monthly Medal in January 2020, and being a member of the senior pennant team that won the John Philp Trophy last year. In his early years, Chris would arrive at 5:30am to line up his buggy, complete a round, enjoy a few post-round beers, and then head off to cricket, a testament to his dedication and love of sport.

Since retiring from the IT industry, Chris has generously contributed his time to the club, volunteering on the Heritage Committee, assisting with grounds maintenance, and organising Spring Valley’s involvement in the Australian Open at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Today, he enjoys reflecting on rounds over a quiet snack and soaking up the camaraderie that has defined his 40 years at the club.

Chris notes the most significant changes at Spring Valley include the new Clubhouse, modifications to holes 4, 5, 8, 12, and the creation of the new 10th hole, along with ongoing improvements to greens, bunkers, and fairways that enhance the playing experience for all. His advice to new members is simple but wise: repair divots, fix pitch marks, and rake bunkers, small acts that make the course better for everyone.

On behalf of Spring Valley Golf Club, we sincerely thank Chris for his 40 years of loyalty, friendship, and contribution. Here’s to many more rounds, memories, and stories to come, well done, Fish!

We look forward to welcoming you often in the clubhouse, and on Wednesday, 17 December, we proudly honour your 40 years of membership.
