2014 Champion Gordon Claney (Vic) takes a one stroke lead going into the final round of the Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship.

In windy conditions at Spring Valley Golf Club in Melbourne today, Claney’s 15 pars and 3 bogeys was enough to secure him the 36-hole lead.

Defending champion Greg Rhodes (Vic) and recently crowned Australian team member Ken Brewer (NSW) sit tied second. Brewer’s two over par 73 was the best round of the day.

Overnight leaders Ian Frost (Qld) and James Lavender (Vic) both struggled today returning scores of 78, to sit tied fourth.

The Victorian team of Rhodes, Geoff Charnley, John Kelly and Ian McCleary lead the State Team event played in conjunction, with NSW five strokes in arrears.

Spring Valley Golf Club is represented by Greg Ebinger and Mal Sosbey. Greg returned a second round score of 9 over par 80 to be tied 14th with a total of 155. Mal had a second round score of 87 to finish tied 88th.

The tough Spring Valley layout, home to four Victorian Opens, and the testing weather conditions, made scoring difficult.

The third and final round will be played tomorrow.

The Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship has been played since 1981 and is for players aged 55 years and over.
