Vale – Laurie Pay

It is with great sadness that Spring Valley Golf Club acknowledges the passing of our esteemed Loyalty member, Laurie Pay, who left us last Tuesday. Laurie was a cherished member of our club for 62 years, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, generosity, and unwavering love for the game of golf.

Laurie epitomised the quiet achiever. Even at 96 years young, he could often be seen effortlessly navigating the course on his mini-scooter, a testament to his enduring passion and spirit. His journey with Spring Valley began on 2 September 1963, starting as a ‘B’ grade member and steadily progressing to ‘A’ Provisional before earning the status of Full Member—a process that took seven years in contrast to the streamlined membership procedures of today.

In 1976, Laurie achieved golfing glory by winning the C Grade Club Championship, along with numerous victories in daily competitions and monthly medal events. Beyond his achievements on the green, Laurie was a steadfast volunteer, helping maintain our course in the club’s early years. From planting couch sprigs on fairways to assisting ground staff decades later, his contributions have left an indelible mark on our course.

A gentle soul and embodiment of the Spring Valley spirit, Laurie’s dedication extended far beyond golf. His commitment to our club’s community, combined with his warmth and humility, made him an inspiration to all members—past and present.

Importantly Laurie was recently awarded Diamond membership of the club.

Cheers to Laurie Pay, a true club legend and inspiration to us all.
