Course News – New Green Update
Published on 27th March 2026 in Course News, Guests News, Latest News, Public Latest NewsWith a gap in the golf schedule following pennant hosting duties and ahead of the Club Championships in May, the course team will undertake heavy topdressing on the 10th, 11th, 18th greens and the putting green on Monday 30 March.
The putting green will be closed until 12.00pm, with putting practice available on both short game greens during this time.
Heavy sand topdressing is an important process that helps smooth surface imperfections and improve overall turf quality. This work is a planned and expected part of managing newly turfed greens.
Over the coming weeks, members can expect some changes in green performance. With reduced mowing and rolling while the turf grows through the sand, surfaces will likely play slightly softer and slower than usual. These measures are necessary to ensure strong, healthy development of the turf.
A follow-up topdressing is anticipated in spring.
Over the past month, turf repairs have also been carried out on some weaker areas of the new greens. As a reminder, these greens are still relatively immature, with root systems continuing to establish while accommodating high levels of daily play.
While some neighbouring clubs have restricted play during similar establishment phases, we have chosen to maintain access for members. I have supported this approach, although some areas have naturally shown signs of stress following a dry and hot summer.
Producing firm, fast greens often requires maintaining turf at the edge of optimal dryness, which can place additional pressure on younger surfaces. At different times, the turf may look green or browner depending on its nutrition and moisture requirements.
Members are encouraged to focus on how the greens are playing, rather than purely on appearance or colour.
Despite a small number of weaker areas, overall performance has been pleasing. With another full growing season ahead, surfaces are expected to continue improving.
