The Senior Pennant season got underway last Friday at Rossdale Golf Club. The Budge team faced Settlers Run, who were making their debut in the Budge Competition, filling the spot left by Cranbourne’s withdrawal.
We fielded a strong team, but Settlers proved to be even stronger on the day. Brett Shemmel was our sole winner in a 6-1 defeat. Mark Templeton led the team out and played a very close match, narrowly losing on the 18th. Brett Shemmel got off to a solid start and maintained his lead, securing a 4&2 victory. Stuart Easey, unfortunately, couldn’t find his best form and went down 3&2.
The top four positions saw us up against tough odds, with Settlers fielding four players with handicaps between scratch and two. Steven Box was square at the turn and playing well, but couldn’t quite maintain his momentum, losing 2&1. Calum Munro recovered from being 4 down after five holes to get back to all square, but two late birdies saw him narrowly lose 2 down on the 18th. David Halligan faced a big-hitting opponent consistently outdriving him by over 30 meters. Despite a great effort, he went down to a birdie on the 18th, 2 down. Scott Thomson, as usual at No.1, faced top-quality opposition, including a former professional. Battling through a troublesome back, Scott kept the match close, eventually going down 3&1 on the 17th.
While a 6-1 defeat looks harsh on paper, many matches were tightly contested. Three of our losses came on the 18th hole, and the team was competitive throughout. Round 2 sees us back at The National, where we’ll be taking on Rossdale.
