J D Leech 2025 handicap match play final – Match Report from Damian Willcox
The J D Leech Competition is a handicap individual match play contest between 32 qualifiers after two rounds of stroke play. It is named after our founding Captain Jack Leech.
It is a very good effort to reach the finals and this year Mal Sosbey and Braden Stokes played off in the final over 18 holes on September 13, 2025.
Mal played off 8 and Braden Stokes played off 120
Both players teed off well on the 1st but Mal’s second shot found the bunker. Braden won with a bogey.
On the second Braden did a huge drive to the left of the fairway and won it with a solid par.
The 3rd saw Mal in the greenside pot and Braden won with a par from grannies corner.
On 4 Braden found the right bunker and took 2 to get out but after a good up and down with a stroke the hole was halved.
Braden had an excellent shot on 5 to win that hole to go 4 up.
Mal regrouped and halved the next 2 holes but on 7B Braden had a shot and went 5 up and winning the 8th put him 5 up.
On 9A saw both players duff the second shot to the green but Braden canned a clutch putt to scrounge a great half.
On 9B Braden was on in 1 and held Mal off to win the hole to go 6 up
12 A Braden did a great drive and put his approach close to win with a 3 with a stroke.
Braden won the match 7 and 6
The match was played in great spirit.
Braden could barley do a thing wrong while Mal made the occasional error and paid the penalty. Mal didn’t win a hole and Braden was an emphatic 2025 J D Leech champion
