Dear Member

What a fantastic start to the year it has been at Spring Valley! The course has been buzzing with golfers, the clubhouse alive with social gatherings, and March has brought a surge in corporate days and food and beverage trade. A huge thank you to our dedicated staff for managing a packed calendar and ensuring a top-tier experience for members and guests alike.

Since our last update, we've hosted school groups, holiday programs, women's, men's, and youth pennant competitions, charity days, and the Women's Challenge Bowl. We also welcomed our friends from The Grange and are now well underway with our golfing syllabus. It's been a busy time at the club, and we're loving every moment of it!

What's Happening This Month?

Daylight saving will end this Sunday, so don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep and make the most of the slightly lighter mornings!

A special highlight this month is our new 9-week Women's Get Into Golf program, kicking off in April. If you know a wife, daughter, sister, cousin, or friend who has yet to experience the joy of golf, now is the perfect time to introduce them to the game!

We're excited to announce a new series of affordable 1-hour member golf clinics this April, led by our PGA Professional, Jake Fullerton. These clinics are a fantastic way to enhance your game. Masterplan Vegetation Update

Members may have noticed some of our trees marked with blue paint over the past week. No doubt members would recall that as part of our course masterplan, OCM Golf has provided a vegetation plan recommending some trees for removal for the following reasons;

  • Restoring the original playing lines and strategic intent
  • Creating a common fairway between holes
  • Extending the length of holes to ensure that Spring Valley remains a challenge for players of all abilities
  • Removing poor specimens that are hazardous or not Indigenous to the area

The Steering Committee has gained valuable insight from our neighbouring clubs, which have completed similar work over the past five years. They recommend starting the permit process well in advance of future coursework to ensure no significant delays.

As part of the process, the trees have been painted to make it a little easier for our Ecologists and Arborists, who will be providing assessments of the vegetation over the next few weeks.

The revegetation plan that will be submitted has committed to planting over 600 indigenous trees and 30,000 native grasses/plants, with many of the trees planted on our boundaries to better screen the course from neighbouring roads and the landfill site.

It is understood that there is some angst when trees are removed, but members should be aware that these decisions are not taken lightly and are carefully considered. Land management is cyclical, and removing vegetation to regenerate is often necessary.

More detailed information relating to trees and vegetation will be released in due course.

Cigarette Butts In Sand Bins

We've noticed that some members have been using the sand bins to dispose of cigarette butts. These bins are meant for repairing divots, not for waste.

Not only is this unpleasant for other members and visitors, but it also means staff must clean them out-something that shouldn't be necessary.

Please be considerate. If you smoke, we encourage you to carry a personal ashtray and dispose of your rubbish properly in the designated bins.

Let's all do our part to keep the course clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Member Forums - April 29th & 30th

Last year, the club started to explore in earnest new ways of generating income to help fund the course capital works program (irrigation upgrade, greens' replacements and other course improvements as detailed in our masterplan).

Many of our members attended our member consultation sessions last October to help us discuss and brainstorm ways in which this could be achieved.

Running in parallel with, and complementing this process, the board is working on SVGC's next three-year strategic plan.

So, in April, we would like to conduct two further member consultation sessions to:

1.    report back to members on the areas of additional revenue we've been exploring

2.    allow all members to have their say about the direction of the club for the next three years.

Given the importance of these topics, we would like as many members as possible to attend one of these sessions. Please involve yourself.

Please reserve your spot via the online timesheets on Tuesday, April 29  or on Wednesday, April 30.

The Grange Wrap Up

The annual golf competition between Spring Valley Golf Club and The Grange Golf Club played for the McMillan Shield in the prestigious Ryder Cup format, once again showcased outstanding golf, competitive spirit, and camaraderie between the two clubs. This year's edition saw Spring Valley GC dominate from the outset, delivering a commanding performance over the first two days before the final day was unfortunately washed out.

The competition began on Friday with the foursomes matches, where Spring Valley displayed exceptional teamwork and precision, storming to an 8½ to 1½ lead over The Grange. The big winners on the day were Steve Foulds and Erwin Michel 6&4, Peter Killen and Larry Vun 4&3, Murray Billing and Marty Rodgers 4&3, Neil Campbell and Michael Hill 4&3. The momentum continued into Saturday's pairs matches, where Spring Valley further extended their lead with another impressive performance, winning 7½ to 2½. The big winners on Saturday were Nick Vendetti and Steve Adams 7&6, Murray Keen and Greg Hardiman 7&5 and Murray Billing and Marty Pearce 6&5.

With a comfortable 16-4 lead heading into Sunday's singles matches, Spring Valley was in a prime position to claim victory. However, persistent rain forced the cancellation of play, meaning the results from the first two days stood, and Spring Valley was officially declared the winner of this year's event.

A standout performer throughout the competition, Nick Vendetti was named Player of the Event for his exceptional skill and contributions to his team's success. While The Grange GC faced a tough challenge this year, the spirit of the competition remained high, and both teams demonstrated excellent sportsmanship.

The event culminated with the traditional dinner and presentations on the Sunday evening where all players enjoyed each other's company, shared a laugh, and enjoyed exceptional food and wine.

Despite the unfortunate weather disruption, the event was a resounding success, strengthening the friendly rivalry between the two clubs. Both teams now look forward to next year's competition in South Australia, where The Grange GC will be eager to reclaim the McMillan Shield.

Women's Challenge Bowl Wrap Up

With heavy rain overnight and a cool start to the morning, 88 women teed off in true autumn weather, a contrast to the warmer days we've experienced recently. Despite the conditions, the course was in excellent shape, and no doubt Craig and his team appreciated the recent rainfall to help keep it in top condition.

Box Hill Golf Club arrived in force, sending an army of players to Spring Valley, and their strategy paid off handsomely-dominating the leaderboard and claiming victory in almost every event!

Congratulations to our winners:

  • Winners: Box Hill - Team 3

  • Runners-Up: Box Hill - Team 1

  • Best Pair: Sally Milne & Di O'Shaughnessy (Box Hill - Team 1)

  • Nearest the Pin (3rd): Di O'Shaughnessy (Box Hill - Team 1)

  • Nearest the Pin (10th): Debbi Irwin (Royal Melbourne)

A huge thank you to the Spring Valley GC women who generously volunteered their time to assist with registration, welcoming, organising, and spotting duties. Your support was invaluable in making the day run smoothly.

Following the golf, players enjoyed a wonderful lunch, and we have received fantastic feedback from visiting clubs on both the friendly service and the quality of the meal.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to a fantastic day of competition and camaraderie. We look forward to welcoming you all again next year!

Thursday Twilight Series Wrap Up

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Twilight Golf Series during March! It was a fantastic season filled with great golf, friendly competition, and plenty of fun.

A special thanks to the Younger Members Sub-Committee for their efforts in organising and championing the events.

From impressive shots to post-round gatherings, the Twilight Series brought our community together in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. We appreciate everyone who played, volunteered, and supported the series.

We look forward to bringing it back in the future. Until then, keep enjoying your golf!

Pennant Updates

Our pennant teams continue to represent Spring Valley with determination and skill across all divisions. Here's how they fared in the latest rounds:

SV Rippers - Youth Team
A memorable clean sweep victory! The SV Rippers dominated against Eastwood at Gisborne GC in Round 5. It was a performance to remember, and a young star emerged from the contest, showcasing the bright future of our youth squad.

Sunday Women's Team
Another challenging match at Rossdale against Latrobe saw our team battle hard, but unfortunately, they went down 4.5 to 2.5. While a win is yet to come this season, their commitment and representation of the club are second to none.

Friday Women's Team
Round 4 at Riversdale resulted in a narrow 3/4 loss to Kew. Despite the defeat, there were fantastic individual wins by Feiyu, Koya, and Pam, highlighting the team's strength and resilience.

Men's Team
A solid 4/3 win against Medway on home soil keeps the boys in the hunt, and most importantly keeps them out of the relegation area.

Our teams continue to give their all, and we are proud of their efforts each week.

A Star is Born

As a club, we are aware that Pennant is a team effort, and we have four teams out there every week doing their best – but bear with me, this one is worth a special mention.

A Spring Valley Golf Club star was born on Sunday, as 9 year old Jasper Xu made his Pennant Debut, playing number 5 for our youth team at Gisborne Golf Club.

Jasper has been a regular at Pennant training all year, and had been asking mum and dad even more regularly whether he was going to play – well, this week was his chance.

We are reliably informed he was so excited during the week, it was like an early Xmas for him.  Despite the distractions of the Gisborne kangaroos grazing on the fairways Jasper shined bright like a diamond all day.  Highlights included no doubles all day, and even a birdie, and a great win to mark his first match in Spring Valley colours, and in his pennant cap #230

Hole in One for Andrew

The ultimate golfing feat was achieved when member Andrew Godfrey found the bottom of the cup with his first shot on the 3rd hole!

Andrew hit the prefect shot from 145m back into the wind with a 7iron, pitching 1m before the hole and bouncing once straight into the hole. Andrew and his playing partners were filled with joy and grabbed a happy snap to mark the occasion.

Well done Andrew!

Roger Hastings Claims the Captain’s Trophy

The prestigious Captain's Trophy, one of Spring Valley's premier men's events, wrapped up this past Saturday after two competitive rounds of Stroke play. This annual event rewards consistency, with the trophy awarded to the player with the lowest combined nett score over both rounds.

This year, Roger Hastings delivered a standout performance, carding impressive nett rounds of 67 & 66, for a total of 133 nett, securing the title in style.
