E-Newsletter - News and Upcoming Events

Friday 28 February 2025

Dear Member,

What a fantastic couple of months it has been at Spring Valley! The golf course has been buzzing with activity, the clubhouse alive with social events, and we've been fortunate to enjoy some excellent weather along the way. A huge thank you to our dedicated staff for their hard work in managing a packed calendar of corporate days, member functions, and social gatherings.

We also have some exciting March events coming up-be sure to check out the details in the articles below. Don't miss out on our next Twilight event, where we're celebrating Pancake Day, so be sure to stay for dessert! Plus, we're thrilled to launch our first Thursday Twilight Series, hosted by our Younger Members Committee. We'll be extending bar hours, and we look forward to creating a fantastic atmosphere at the club.

With the new golfing season well underway, it's timely to remind all members of our dress code standards. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining the high standard that reflects the club's values and traditions.

On the competition front, Pennant season has begun, and we encourage members to follow along with our weekly updates, available on the website. If you can, get out and support our teams-your presence makes a difference!

It's been wonderful to welcome students from Mentone Grammar as part of their curriculum program for a new year. Seeing the next generation of golfers enjoying our facilities is exciting, and we hope to welcome some of them as junior members in the near future.

A warm welcome also to the 28 new members who have joined the club this year! Thank you to those who have referred family and friends-your support in growing our community is truly appreciated.

Take-home meals are back next week! They've been in high demand and a hot topic at the bistro bar, so be sure to get your orders in over the weekend. If you haven't tried them yet, check out the testimonials on our website to see what everyone's raving about.

In exciting news, our irrigation project is officially underway, starting with the 12th hole. The great news is that the course remains fully open throughout the process. Here's what to expect in the coming weeks:

  • Stage 1: Installation of the irrigation mainline from the 12th pump shed to the 18th Tee. Both holes remain open, with forward markers for safety.

  • Stage 2: Irrigation installation on the 11th fairway, requiring its closure for approximately 4-6 days. The 19th green will be in play.

  • Stage 3: A temporary closure of the 10th hole for 1-2 days, while the 11th and 19th holes remain in play.

  • Stage 4: Irrigation work on the 18th fairway, requiring the hole's closure while the 10th, 11th, and 19th remain in play.

We appreciate your patience as we make these improvements that will enhance playing conditions for years to come.

And finally, as many of you have already seen, our world-famous footy tipping competition is just around the corner! While management does not officially endorse the poorly dressed Collingwood mannequin in the terrace bar, it may well feature in our next "How Not to Dress" article!

As always, if there is anything you need, don't hesitate to reach out, either in person or via return email. We hope you enjoy the read below.

19th Hole in Play - Chipping Green Closed

Members would have seen announcement during the week of the irrigation works that are now underway.  While these works take place, the 19th hole will be in play, and as such, there will be no access for member practice, lessons or clinics during this time.

As is often the case with these things, timings are a little tricky to tie down, and there are a number of contributing factors to work flows and the like - so from Monday March 3rd, please consider the 19th hole in play, and off limits for member practice, lessons or clinics until further notice - which will likely be the end of March.

It is expected that the Northern range short game area to be a bit busier given this closure, but there should still be opportunities for lessons to take place there - and our coaches will be given access to this shared area during off peak times.

Snake On Course

There has been several snake sightings this week, so it serves as a timely reminder to be aware as you are walking around the course.

Snakes are not aggressive unless they are provoked or stepped on.  There have been three species of snakes reported on the course, being Eastern Brown, Red Belly Black and Copper Heads. Be mindful that these snakes are all venomous.

We have snake bite kits situated in the GSC, the Bar, the Course Marshal cart and 6 of our Course Staff vehicles, so if there is a snake bite event, our team won't be too far away, however, step one in an emergency is to call for an Ambulance on 000.

If you observe any of these symptoms while on the golf course, seek immediate medical attention.

Heritage Recycling

The Heritage recycling fundraising has really taken off in the last 6 months with over $1,000 raised so far. The main recycling bin is just outside the entrance to the buggy shed and is emptied regularly thanks to Feirn Thomson, Phoebe Burfield, Helen Noble and Shirley Munro. There is still a very large amount of cans and bottles being deposited in the on course bins and we are currently exploring options to minimise this. Our Monday course volunteers are doing a great job emptying the on-course bins and extracting the bottles and cans for recycling. Meanwhile, if members could bring these back to the recycling bin that would be an enormous help.

Pennant Season is Underway

Pennant Season commenced last weekend for our Men's team, our Women's team, and out Youth team.

Our Men's team went down to Southern had a strong 6-1 over Rosanna, in a rematch of last year's final.

Excitement was in the air as Spring Valley unveiled the new owner of Cap No. 228 - 15yo debutant Leo Yang. (Pictured here with Scott Hooper & Captain Anthony Cecchi)

With Leo's very proud parents in tow, the honour of presenting the cap was given to Scott Hooper - a heart and soul veteran of this side.   Leo Yang, made a fine start to his SVGC Pennant career, with a wonderful 5/4 win.

Our Women's team were off to Latrobe to take on Royal Melbourne.  An unfamiliar Spring Valley ladies team for the 2025 Division 3 season played at Latrobe GC against Royal Melbourne in round 1. We had a few regulars missing and were taking on a very strong team who had unexpectedly dropped from Division 2 and it was clear that they intended to return there very quickly!  We had two debutants in Ha Pham and Tracey Lin and another youngster in Terri Farrell filling in for some of our regulars, so a big thanks to those ladies for playing in matches where they all had significantly higher handicaps than their opponents.

Our Youth team made the trek out to Melbourne Airport, and came away with a 4-1 win over Box Hill - and we are eagerly awaiting the match report for that one.

Our Friday Women get underway this week with a home match to start the season.

Click on the link below for full reports, scores and ladders, and this weeks matches are as follows.

Men's Team vs Southern @ Latrobe at 12.10pm

Women's Team vs Kew @ Kooringal at 12.20pm

Youth Team have the bye.

Friday Team vs Yarra Yarra at Spring Valley at 8.00am

Women's Opening Day Wrap Up

The women's golf season at Spring Valley Golf Club kicked off in spectacular fashion on Thursday, 30th January, with a fantastic turnout and beautiful summer weather.  The morning's competition was followed by lunch and joined by additional guests.

A special thank you to Vice President Michael Hill, who attended the event and provided the women's group with an insightful update on the activities and projects currently being undertaken by the committee.
