On a wet winter's morning, Feirn Thomson and Margaret Willcox braved the conditions to play the final of the President's Trophy, a handicapped match play event.
Feirn started strong, winning three out of the first four holes, while Margaret struggled, finding trees on the 1st and 4th holes. However, Margaret soon gathered her composure. Despite a wayward shot left off the 5th, she hit a beautiful second shot out of the rough onto the green to halve the hole. The 6th hole was also halved.
Feirn won the 7th hole after her third shot landed in the bunker, taking two shots to get out, but she made a good one-putt. Margaret hit her approach shot over the back and couldn't match Feirn's bogey. Margaret won the 8th, and both players parred the 9th hole, leaving Feirn 2 up at the turn.
On the 10th, Margaret produced a very good 4. She was short of the right-hand greenside bunker, then chipped over the green onto the 11th fairway, and bunted up to within one-putt territory, sinking the putt! However, Feirn held her cool and won the 11th.
The 12th, 13th, and 14th holes were closely contested, with Margaret taking advantage of extra shots, making it all square after the 15th hole.
Both players' tee shots hit the fairway on the 16th, but Feirn's 3-wood let her down, landing her in the bunker. With an extra shot, Margaret won the hole. On the 17th, both players were on the green for 4, but Margaret sank a beautiful downhill putt for par, while Feirn narrowly missed hers.
Victory went to Margaret, 2 and 1. Congratulations to both players on a well-fought match, and well done to Margaret on winning your first President's Trophy!
