Member Update December

Dear Member,

December is here and based on the last couple of days, so is the summer weather.

Club Championships have been run and won for another year. Congratulations to all participants, particularly our winners.  The course was presented in unbelievable condition, considering the day yesterday. All players today were grateful to Superintendent Craig, and his team.  These days are not possible without the efforts of Tim and his team in the Golf Service Centre, as well as all the hospitality staff who put on a great show.

And, a big shout out to all of our volunteer referees who gave up their Sundays - it is very much appreciated.  A list of winners is pictured below, as are some further photos of the day, and Match Reports from our referees.

A reminder that the Course and Clubhouse will be closed on Monday 18tth December and will reopening on Friday 22nd December.  Closing the course gives our course team a vital opportunity to undertake works that are generally not possible while we are open, including but not limited to fairway scarifying, fairway coring and tree management work.  Craig has provided some further detail in his course report below.

In staff news, it's with sadness that we bid farewell to our Head Chef Nick, who has tendered his resignation this week. He will continue with us through until Christmas. Join us in wishing him all the best for his future endeavors and thanking him for his dedicated service. The search for a successor has commenced. With this in mind, if you're eyeing our delectable Christmas Take Home Meals, make sure to place your orders by December 10th, so Nick can ensure these are ready for your Christmas celebrations.  We will be outlining our festive season operating plans in the coming days, as we work through the transition period.

Operations Manager Jamie Graham has been with us for a month or so now, and has spent that time getting to know members and staff, as well as what the F&B operation here at Spring Valley looks like.  Not only will Jamie play a key part in the search for our new Chef, he will be working closely with the team to ensure the service and fare is as good as it can be.

The Clubhouse has been a whirlwind of corporate activity lately, and we're mindful of the balancing act this brings. As the end of season's festivities for our corporate guests ease, you'll notice a gradual relaxation in the clubhouse's bustling atmosphere. Your patience and understanding during this busy period have been invaluable, and we extend our thanks to all members.

As mentioned, with Christmas approaching, we will outline the departmental trading hours in the coming days and publish them in due course.

Finally, if you have miss any of the website articles or communications this month, don't worry, we've got you covered. Below, you'll find highlights and website links to keep you up to date with all the latest news from the Club,

As always, your feedback and ideas are crucial to us. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please let me know.

Warm regards,

Chris Poulton
General Manager

Twilight Wrap Up

The recent Nine and Dine Twilight Golf Event was a smashing success, drawing in over 80 enthusiastic members for a Team Ambrose event followed by a Parma and Pot.

The competition was fierce, but emerging triumphant on the Front Nine were Kalani Cust, Gerard Clarke, Matthew Clarke, and Michael Riach, demonstrating exceptional prowess on the earlier holes.

The excitement didn't wane on the Back Nine, where David Spicer, Gavin Toole, Alan Ashcroft, and Pamela Toole exhibited remarkable talent, clinching victory with their stellar performance.

Special recognition goes to our Near The Pin (NTP) winners whose precision and accuracy stood out amidst the challenging course: Andrew Lian, Richard Pamment , Greg Knowles, and Chris Ricketson.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the participants who contributed to the event's success. Stay tuned for more exciting events on the horizon.

A Great Shot from Trevor Smillie

During the second round of qualifying in the C Grade Club Championships, member Trevor Smillie had a round to remember, albeit a bit peculiar.

Starting off on a challenging note with a forgettable second hole, Trevor faced a setback on the Par 3 third hole when his swing sent the ball into the bushes. Undeterred, he confidently teed up his provisional ball and executed a flawless shot that left both him and playing partner Dean Phelan in disbelief.

Against the odds, the ball landed on the green and gracefully rolled into the hole, turning what could have been a misfortune into a remarkable par. Kudos to Trevor for achieving a rare feat—a par on a par 3 with only two shots!

An Albatross for Nick Venditti

The familiar face of Nick Venditti stole the spotlight with an extraordinary shot in a recent Sunday Competition. Nick accomplished the elusive albatross on the long par 5 seventeenth, a feat so rare that the PGA cites its occurrence rate at 1 in 6 million, a statistical rarity even when compared to the more common hole-in-one at 1 in 12,500.

Despite the achievement, the details surrounding Nick's feat sparked some friendly banter among his playing partners, Caleb Wamsteker and Russell Simmons. Questions arose about Nick's driving prowess (out driving Caleb) and whether the ball gracefully avoided the bunker or landed directly on the green. Amidst the good-natured teasing, one thing remained certain-Nick, congratulations! At the end of the day, your scorecard proudly boasts a remarkable two on that memorable hole. Well done!

Juniors Flying High

Two standout performers from Spring Valley have shone brightly in the Season Tour of the US Kids Tournaments.

Oliver Battistella clinched a significant win in the boys' 14 and under category, marking a milestone in his tour journey. His excitement was evident, and he eagerly looks forward to the upcoming events.

Riaan Ayoobi's relentless dedication to practice at Spring Valley has paid off handsomely. Not only did he secure the season victory in the under-6 boys category, but he also consistently achieved first-place finishes in various events throughout the season.

Their accomplishments underscore the emerging talent within Spring Valley's junior golf community.

Senior Pennant Final

Friday the 24th November was the date for the much anticipated final of the John Philp Trophy between Spring Valley GC and the undefeated Woodlands GC played at Rossdale GC.

With the narrow defeat from last season at the hands of Cranbourne GC still fresh in our minds, we were set to atone and bring the trophy back to its spiritual home, Spring Valley.

The Captain, team manager, assistants to the Captain, and the numerous people in the background, had done their job in the week leading up to the final, and it was now left to the elite 5 that were selected to deliver their end of the deal.

With the threat of inclement weather hitting us mid-late afternoon, we knew the job ahead had to be done not just efficiently, but promptly also. Pre-match, the Captain gave one of his all time great inspirational speeches, and in that, the squad was chanting at the bit and raring to go. Through the banner we ran, and stared down our opponents. Right, lets do this. Soon after, we realised that just before we tee off, best we grab a calculator, because the Philp being such a prestigous ‘handicapped’ matchplay format where usually opponents are matched with the same handicaps, or one or 2 difference at best, we were soon to realise that Woodlands were fielding their A team, with handicaps ranging from 2 to 10 in their 5 man squad. Suddenly, our 5 man squads handicap range of 11 to 18, didn't quiet have the intimidating factor I was hoping for in the lead up to the match. But fear not, game plan number 2 was in my back pocket and we put that into action. To the tee box we go.
