Women's Foursomes Gross Champions

The Gross Foursomes Final showcased a thrilling contest between Erica Ligthart and Rosemary McQuade, and their opponents Hayley Peters and Jody Doran. The quality of play throughout the match was truly remarkable. Erica and Rosemary set the tone early, exhibiting a masterful display of precision with their approach shots and finesse on the greens, resulting in two birdies within the opening three holes. By the end of the third hole, they had established a commanding three-hole lead.

Although Hayley and Jody managed to narrow the gap with a win on the 5th hole, the turning point came on the 8th hole, where Rosemary's downhill slider teetered on the edge before dramatically dropping into the hole. Bunker challenges on the 9th and 10th holes for Hayley and Jody further solidified Erica and Rosemary's lead, ultimately resulting in a dominant 5-hole advantage after ten holes. A minor setback on the 11th was quickly overcome with another birdie on the 12th and a par on the 13th, securing Erica and Rosemary's well-deserved victory with a score of 6/5. The match was marked not only by exceptional golf but also by a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie, with each stroke adding to the suspense and thrill of the competition.

Women's Foursomes Nett Champions

On a grey, damp, and blustery Thursday morning, the two formidable teams of Pat Ong and Ann Petric, and Rhea Martin and Lois Barnett embarked on their highly anticipated Match Play final, commencing from the first tee. Right from the outset, it became evident that this contest would be a closely fought one.

The lead swung back and forth throughout the day, with one pair securing a 2-up advantage, only to have it reversed in the following holes. After 3.5 hours of intense play, players returned to the first hole and it was abundantly clear that the match had lived up to its competitive billing. A brilliant long drive down the center by Rhea, culminated in a victory for Rhea and Lois.

Congratulations to all the participants for their exceptional display of skill, delivering an enthralling match filled with spirited competition and outstanding golfing prowess.

Senior Pennant - Round 4

Both the John Philp and the Ron Budge teams made the short trip to Woodlands Golf Club for Round 4 of the Senior Pennant.

The Philp team continued their winning run, with a close 3-2 win over Rossdale. Geoff Cadwallader, Gerald March and captain Murray Billing, making his first appearance of the season, securing the points.

The Budge Team finally hit their straps and secured their first full point of the season against Southern GC by a convincing margin 6-1. Stuart Easey qualified for the team by turning 55 in the previous week and made his debut, celebrating with a fine 4&3 win. Dave Potts and Peter Light continued their good form, both winning 4&2 and 3&1 respectively. Mal Sosbey was down at the turn, but was too steady for his opponent, turning the match on the back 9, winning 3&1. A good week for David Halligan, supported by Fairley, he played well from the start and finished up with our best win 5&3. At the top of the team, Scott Thomson went down narrowly on the 17th - if anyone knows where Scott can get a driver which goes straight, he'd be delighted to hear from you. At No1, Scott Blair-West was locked in a really close game, with the lead never more than 1 hole to either player, but Scott prevailed, sinking a clutch putt on the 18th to win 1-up.

Both teams head to Southern Golf Club for the next round.

Junior Pennant - Round 4

This week, the Spring Valley Scorpions hit the road for a match at the picturesque Riversdale Golf Club, one of our valued Reciprocal clubs. The course was in fantastic condition, benefiting from recent improvements to the first and second holes. Our opponents were Riversdale White, one of three junior teams representing Riversdale, and it was a pleasure to see so many talented young golfers in action. However, our Scorpions were a force to be reckoned with and were prepared for a challenging battle.

This week, all our team members were given shots, although the handicap difference was quite minimal between the opponents. Aidan Shim and Lenny Wilton, our first two players, engaged in matches that went all the way to the 18th hole. Lenny managed to secure a hard-fought 1-up victory, while Aidan, who was three down at the turn, made a remarkable comeback to end the match in a well-deserved draw.

The young prodigy Jasper Xu celebrated his first win of the season, attributing it to the improved weather conditions and the relief of not having to wear his dad's oversized coat (see picture below). Unfortunately, our next two matches featuring Nigel Li and Oliver Battistella ended in narrow defeats. Nonetheless, both displayed exceptional golfing skills and great sportsmanship in defeat.

With the overall score tied at 2.5 to 2.5, it all came down to the last hole where Emilia Shim found herself halved while strolling up the 18th. Emilia's beaming smile made it hard to believe that this was a high-pressure moment. She played a fantastic hole, recording a 7, but her opponent managed to prevail with a 5.

Overall, it was a splendid day out in the sun, enjoying the beautiful course conditions and engaging in friendly competition. The Scorpions demonstrated their skill, teamwork, and good spirits, and it was a memorable day on the golf course.

Northern Range Bunker

Members will see that the sand bin & bucket holder has been relocated from the right of the first to the rotunda adjacent to the first tee.

This is a great result, as the previous location had been identified as a hazard for those using it, as there was a risk a thinned bunker shot could hit someone.  While this is still the case, there will be less people heading towards that bunker now, hence mitigating the risk.

To that end, the Northern range bunker is now ready to reopen for play.
