Member Update - July

Dear Member,

Winter has arrived in full force, and we hope you're staying warm and enjoying the cozy atmosphere at our club. As the colder months settle in, we have some important updates and reminders to share with you in this month's newsletter. To access the links provide, it is best to be logged into the website.

We are thrilled to announce that our community has grown stronger with the addition of 44 new members in the past 90 days. A warm welcome to each and every one of you! We encourage all existing members to extend a warm greeting to our new arrivals. Remember, if you happen to spot their names on the timesheet, don't hesitate to add your own. A simple gesture like that can be the start of a lifelong friendship. Let's foster a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and connected.

An important reminder to all members to check-in at the Golf Shop. Even on a quiet afternoon when you plan to play just a few holes or practice on the chipping green, it is crucial that you inform the GSC staff of your presence. We have recently encountered instances where members went directly to the tees or practice range without notifying our team. Unfortunately, this has resulted in members teeing off on the wrong holes, playing with the wrong groups, and even hitting off from closed tees. To ensure a smooth and error-free experience for everyone, please make it a habit to check in at the Golf Shop whenever you visit the club, even during these colder days. CLICK HERE for further information.

The Spring Valley Cup is reaching its climax, with only eight pairs remaining in the event. The competition is heating up as fierce competitors aim to turn the tables on last year's results. It's also interesting to note that out of the eight remaining pairs, only two were initially registered. The remaining singles were paired up by the Golf Service Centre. Scott Leggett & Rob Wrightson and Otto Meile & Philip Elliot, once strangers to each other, have formed pairings that may earn them a spot in the semi-finals. Their success story might inspire others to seek mystery partners for future events, making the GSC a hub for new partnerships and friendships.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Niv Kanthan and Noah Paterson, who finished second and third respectively in the recent Victorian Junior Amateur event. Their exceptional performance is a testament to their dedication and talent, and we're proud to have such outstanding young golfers representing our club. Well done, Niv and Noah!

Our Take Home Meals continue to be a sizzling success, providing warmth and nourishment during these chilly days. We're thrilled to see the overwhelming response from members, and we appreciate your continued support. Remember to order your meals online by Tuesday each week to secure your order. With the demand skyrocketing, we want to ensure you don't miss out on your favourite winter dishes.

Once again, congratulations to all the competition winners who have braved the challenging weather conditions and showcased their skills on the course. Your determination and passion for the sport are truly inspiring.

And finally, We would also like to remind all members that the annual subscriptions for this year were due on July 1st. If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to check your payment status and contact the club if you have any outstanding dues.

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions. We're here to ensure your membership experience during this winter season is nothing short of exceptional.

Stay warm and enjoy the winter wonderland at Spring Valley.

Kind Regards

Chris Poulton

Introducing Our New Course Foreman: Joe Tormey

We are thrilled to announce the addition of Joe Tormey to our esteemed course team this month. As our new Course Foreman, Joe brings a wealth of experience and expertise that will undoubtedly enhance our operations at Spring Valley Golf Club. Originally hailing from Charlton in Country Victoria, Joe's passion for golf course management has taken him on an impressive journey thus far.

Course Report

Over the past month, our dedicated course staff have been hard at work addressing some specific challenges to enhance your golfing experience. We wanted to take a moment to update you on the progress we've made and the exciting changes that lie ahead.

  1. Weed Control: One of our primary focuses has been the eradication of unwanted grasses, specifically Parramatta and Kikuyu, from rough and fairway areas. Although this process has been time-consuming, we have opted for spot spraying to minimize damage to the grasses we want to promote. While it's challenging to achieve 100% control of Kikuyu and Parramatta, our long-term goal is to significantly reduce the presence of these unwanted species.

  2. Spot Spraying of Poa Annua: We are pleased to report that the spot spraying of Poa annua on couch interfaces and couch lawns is progressing well. As a result of this treatment, you may notice some yellowing of the couch grass. However, we assure you that it will recover once it emerges from its winter dormancy period.

  3. Green Surface Maintenance: To combat water puddling on the green's surface during the winter months, we have enlisted the services of the Air2G2 contractor on a monthly basis. Additionally, alternate weeks will see solid tining being carried out to improve drainage and overall playing conditions.

  4. Vegetation Removal on the 11th Hole: We have recently removed vegetation on the left-hand side of the 11th hole. The photo attached below depicts the extent to which trees had encroached upon the playing line. By removing these trees, we have not only created a more spacious teeing area but also taken measures to distribute wear more evenly. In the coming weeks, we will relocate the tee board and plaque to the edge of the tee. Moreover, the tee itself will undergo turfing with Santa ana couch in the upcoming spring season.

We hope these updates provide you with insight into the efforts we are making to continually improve the course. Your satisfaction is our priority, and we appreciate your understanding during these maintenance projects. For more information and updates, please check out the full article via the link below.

Checking In at the GSC

We understand your enthusiasm to start playing on the course or practice at the range as soon as you arrive at the Club. It's only natural to be excited! However, we would like to emphasise the importance of checking in at the Golf Service Centre (GSC) upon your arrival.

Even if it's a quiet afternoon and you plan on playing just a few holes or practicing on the chipping green, it is crucial that you take a moment to inform the GSC staff of your presence. We have recently encountered instances where members went directly to the tees or practice range without notifying our team. Unfortunately, this has resulted members teeing off on the wrong holes, playing with the wrong groups and hitting off from closed tees.

By checking in at the GSC, you help us ensure that everyone enjoys a smooth and organised golfing experience. Here are a few reasons why it's essential to make this a habit:

  1. Accurate Scheduling: Checking in allows us to keep track of the tee times and manage the flow of players effectively. This way, you won't inadvertently disrupt the timing, play off the wrong tee or join the wrong group.

  2. Safety and Courtesy: Your check-in helps us maintain a safe environment for all golfers. We need to be aware of who is on the course and ensure that groups are properly organised. It also helps us prevent situations where the tee may be temporarily closed for maintenance or other reasons.

  3. Course Maintenance: In some instances, the course staff may be working on maintenance activities such as spraying chemicals or performing other tasks. Your check-in ensures that you are aware of any potential risks and avoids unintentional interference with their work, including tracking chemicals onto the turf surfaces.

Apart from the practical reasons mentioned above, we want to highlight the warm and friendly atmosphere created by our GSC team. They genuinely enjoy seeing you whenever you visit the Club. Taking a moment to say hi and check in not only fulfills our safety requirements but also allows our staff to extend their hospitality and ensure your overall experience is exceptional.

Insurance Reminder

Members are reminder of the changes to the Club insurance policy that came into place at the end of the financial year.

The Club is no longer able to provide the insurance policy to cover members' golf equipment and golf ball damage to motor vehicles.

Our broker has reported that the insurers have advised that the policy design is seen as problematic whereby a golf club is the named insured (holds the policy) but with individual retail consumer beneficiaries.

Insurers see this as breach of the recently introduced group purchasing bodies legislative changes and adherence to "product design & distribution obligations". Due to legislation, it restricts insurers underwriting scope and has resulted in this desired cover no longer being available.

It is the Club's recommendation that members seek alternate cover for their golf equipment, such as through home and contents policies.

Please Note - Member's Liability Insurance will continue. All golf club members have Players Personal Liability Insurance coverage as part of their Golf Australia affiliation fee. Broadly this policy covers the legal liability of members to pay compensation for personal injury or property damage which occurs while playing or practising golf or attending a golf event or venue as a player, guest or spectator.

Charity Day Wrap Up

The picturesque greens of Spring Valley Golf Club came alive on Thursday, 22nd June, as golf enthusiasts and supporters gathered for a memorable Women's Charity Golf Day. The event, a 4 Person Stableford Aggregate Competition, saw participants engage in a spirited round of Rainbow Golf, with groups teeing off from different markers on each hole. With a remarkable turnout of 75 golfers, including 8 guests, the day was filled with camaraderie, generosity, and plenty of excitement.

Mother Nature smiled upon the event, blessing the golfers with favourable weather, that held off the bad elements until after the competition had concluded. This stroke of luck added to the overall enjoyment of the day and allowed participants to fully immerse themselves in the festivities.

One of the highlights of the event was the overwhelming support and generosity of the attendees and members, in memory of Liz Heading who recently passed away after a short but courageous battle with this debilitating disease. Thank you to everyone for their kind contributions to, raffle prizes, silent auction donations, and enthusiastic bidding, the Women's Charity Golf Day managed to raise an impressive sum in excess of $3500. The funds were directed towards supporting the noble cause of MND Victoria, a charitable organisation dedicated to helping individuals and families affected by motor neurone disease.

The Women’s Committee express their sincere gratitude to everyone who attended the Women’s Charity Golf Day and contributed in their own special way. Whether it was through active participation, generous donations, or spreading the word about the event, every effort made a significant impact in supporting MND Victoria and their mission.

Congratulations to all the winners for their remarkable achievements and sportsmanship.

Trivia Night Wrap Up

On Saturday June 3rd, Spring Valley Golf Club hosted an electrifying Trivia Night that brought together over 110 enthusiastic members. It was an evening filled with laughter, friendly competition, and an abundance of knowledge. We are thrilled to report that the event was a tremendous success.

First and foremost, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Member Steve Adams, who wholeheartedly championed this event from the beginning. His passion and commitment truly set the stage for an unforgettable night.

Of course, we cannot forget to acknowledge the true stars of the night: our remarkable teams! It was an intense battle of wits and quick thinking, but in the end, it was Matthew Delahunty's team that emerged as the triumphant champions. Their outstanding performance earned them a remarkable score of 113 points, securing a well-deserved victory and an undeniable bragging right in the Clubhouse. Congratulations to Matthew and his team for their impressive achievement!

However, Trivia Night was about much more than just winning. It was an opportunity for our community to come together, forge new connections, and enjoy a night of pure fun. We witnessed smiles, shared laughter, and the joy of friendly competition throughout the evening. We are immensely grateful to all the participants for their enthusiastic engagement and for creating an atmosphere that truly embodied the spirit of camaraderie.

Lastly, we would be remiss not to mention the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received about the event. The energy in the room was infectious, and it was heartwarming to see so many members thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Once again, we express our deepest gratitude to everyone who made Trivia Night at Spring Valley Golf Club an outstanding success. We couldn't have done it without you! We look forward to hosting more engaging events in the future and continuing to foster the incredible sense of community that makes Spring Valley such a special place.

Until next time, keep those brains sharp and get ready for more exciting challenges!
