Spring Valley Golf Club
News and Upcoming Events

Dear Member

Last Saturday was a special day for our current and some past Spring Valley Men's Pennant players.  Not only did two of them pair up to win the Philip Courtney Trophy - Congratulations Steve and Greg, but more on that below; we had two of our longest serving members, in Dick Kirby & Ron Toe on hand to present the current Men's team, and some of our former players with their Spring Valley Pennant Numbers, introduce the squad to the members and draw the all important raffle.  The season kicked off last week, and our host day is this Sunday, so if you are able to, our guys would love the support.

Speaking of winning, our gold letter man has been in this week and made a start on updating the boards, so if you are one of the board event winners from the last twelve months, it might be worth sneaking past your board!

Membership is continuing on an upward trajectory and we extend a warm welcome to our 11 new members during February, Raymond Tam, Frank Brockmuller, Jesse Haslam, Maksymillien Suwara, Louis Taffe, Audry Taffe, Nathan Yan, Fangfan Niu, Michael Zanati, Sharman Wang and Chloe Wang. We very much look forward to seeing you all on course and in the clubhouse soon.

A reminder that a $1000 family discount is still available for new members, so if you do have a partner, or family member looking for a new Club or looking at joining a Club for the first time, please get in contact with Kim Little, agm@springvalleygolf.com.au who will be more than happy to assist you.

Our "Grab and Go - Take Home Meals" are back and available each Wednesday and Thursday. Let us take the stress of planning, shopping, preparing and cooking dinner and treat yourself and your family to a Chef prepared takeaway. We've done all the hard work for you - Just heat and serve!

This week we have Duck Risotto, with wild mushrooms, Jerusalem artichokes and sage for just $15.00 or 2 for $28.00. A new menu item will be available each week and limited numbers do apply. CLICK HERE to read more and view this week's bistro specials.

It is also worth noting that Members may have seen a couple of friendly police officers in the car park this week.  If so, don't worry -  they aren't after any of us, they are here with their drone, looking at some of the neighbors between the Club boundary and Westall Road.  They were not a liberty to tell me exactly why, or what they were looking for, but it is probably a good reminder to ensure your cars are secure before you head off for golf - just in case.

Regards

Chris Poulton
General Manager

Course Report

Course Superintendent, Craig Anthony's February Course report is now available on the website, with photos. Please find an excerpt below on recent works.

Minor turf repair jobs have been completed on a number holes to ensure we have as close to 100% couch grass cover before the growing season finishes. The turf has been harvested from the couch area, to the south of the 19th hole. Harvesting turf on-site is substantially cheaper than buying the turf from a turf farm.

Undesirable grasses and weeds have been sod cut and removed from between the middle and forward tee on the 2nd hole. This area will be maintained as bare sand to minimise any new weed germination.  Native heath land plants/grasses similar to what has been established at the 10th tee will be planted in the autumn.

Hole In One

The first shot of the round in golf is often the hardest and most golfers are happy to find a fairway or green. But during last Tuesday’s morning competition Randal Garnham defied the odds and found the bottom of the hole on the tenth, with his first shot of the day.

It was a beautifully struck 7 iron that gave Randal his first hole in one.

Congratulations to Randal, you may be skipping the warm up next time you play as well!

Philip Courtney Final

After coming through two rounds of qualifying, then surviving the match play rounds, today we saw Steve Foulds & Greg Ebinger in the final up against Matthew Beck & Simon Cafferkey.

Congratulations to Steve & Greg, pictured who came out on top with a 3/2 victory.

Referee Damian Willcox has provided the following Match Report:

Greg Ebinger (6) and Steve Foulds (10) 4 vs Matthew Beck (17) 11 and Simon Cafferkey (23) 17

  • Greg and Steve won the first hole with Greg getting a birdie.
  • Matthew and Simon won the second courtesy of their shot.
  • Both teams stepped up and halved the 3rd with birdies.
  • Greg birdied the 4th to get them 1 up
  • 5 and 6 were halved with Matthew and Simon using their shots
  • However Greg and Steve won 7,8 and 9 to turn 4 up.
  • Both 10 and 11 were halved but Simon and Matthew won 12
  • After halving the 13th Greg's par couldn't match Matthew's nett 2
  • On 15 Greg's par put them back to 3 up
  • A halved 16 saw Greg and Steve win the trophy 3/2

The match was played in great spirit and Matthew and Simon both had chances but didn't take them.

Pennant News

On Saturday after golf, the majority of our Men's Pennant Squad were introduced and our Round One Team was announced.

In what was a special day, there was a nod to the history of Pennant here at Spring Valley, as our current players were presented with their Pennant Numbers.

Based on the order they represented the club in, dating back to our first Men's team in 1958.

We were fortunate enough to have life member Dick Kirby, #5, and Ron Toe, #8, who happen to have 132 years of SV membership between them on hand to present the team their hats, and Board Member John Scheffer, #48, assist with the results of the day.

We wish all our teams the best of luck for the season ahead, and it goes without saying, they appreciate your support.

The highly anticipated raffle was drawn, and we congratulate all our lucky winners - and thank everyone who purchased a ticket for the support. Read on for more, including a list of raffle winners & Round One results.

Travis Harrison Golf Coaching: March Update

Summer has come to an end but we still have another month of daylight savings to enjoy longer days at the course.

Feb has been such a fun month of coaching with clients getting amazing results, my high performance coaching for Golf Australia kicking off for the year and also having the opportunity to present to the 2nd year PGA trainee professionals.

This variety makes my job so satisfying! Having variety in your own golf game is also essential for keeping the game exciting and more importantly it will keep you improving.

I see numerous golfers who continue to do the same things but expect improved results?! This includes aspects like always chipping with one club, never changing course strategy, practice without challenge or no experimentation with shot options.

Click the link below to read more, and find out about upcoming clinics, and this weeks video tip!
