April Member Update

Dear Member

As we bid farewell to March, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible month we've had here at Spring Valley. Our calendar was brimming with exciting events, including but not limited to, all three of our highly-anticipated Pennant Host Days, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our annual Grange Match, two special Guest Days, the thrilling Women's Challenge Bowl, and a variety of corporate golf days and seminars.

A conservative estimate suggests that there has been more than 3000 non members enjoyed the Spring Valley experience during that time, and it is pleasing to report the feedback on our golf course, hospitality, staff and members has been wonderful.  We've compiled some highlights of these events below, so you can relive the moments or catch up on anything you may have missed.

Our trading hours over Easter have been published on the website, and are as follows:

Good Friday: April 7th
Reception & Clubhouse Closed.
GSC Open from 6.45 am until 6 pm, with limited grab & go catering.
Entrance to the GSC via the automatic doors only.

Easter Saturday: April 8th
Reception Closed
Clubhouse & GSC open from 6.45 am until 6 pm
Please note there will be no drinks cart service on Easter Saturday afternoon.

Easter Sunday: April 9th
Reception Closed
Clubhouse & GSC open from 6.45 am until 6 pm
Please note there will be no drinks cart service on Easter Sunday.

Easter Monday: April 10th
Reception Closed
Clubhouse & GSC open from 6.45 am until 6 pm.
Please note there is no social golf on Easter Monday until after the completion of the Masters Breakfast and Golf event.

There have been some excellent results from our Members recently, with Tom Power Horan's stunning victory last Sunday, and Daniel Beckmann chalking up a top 10, our Cadet's have been doing wonderful things on the US Kids golf tour, and of course our Pennant Teams are out there each week proudly representing their club.

Many thanks to the members who participated in our recent member survey.  We will be sharing a high level summary of the survey results with all members in due course.

Those who completed it may recall, one of the questions in the survey was Would you like to be included in the draw for a $50 F&B voucher?

There were a number of clever folks who said that they would, and the ten lucky winners of that F&B voucher are:

  • Barry Gust; Barrie Meadows; Casey Johnson; Brad Stone; Peter O'Flynn; Jordan Purdey; Margaret Willcox; Anne Petric; Stephen Ingham and Jino Kim.

Credit has been added to your house accounts.

There are a number of member events coming up, and some exciting opportunities for those in your life that may want to take up this great game - our School Holiday Program and our Trial Membership offer are outlined below, along with some club events.

And finally, this week you would have seen some new faces in the Golf Service Centre.  I am thrilled to announce that Patrick Carlon and Melinda Crawford have commenced here with us at Spring Valley, so if you see them, please make them feel welcome.

Our new Director of Golf, Tim Angwin will be joining us this week as well, his start has been delayed a day or two due to illness, but we cannot wait for him to join us.

As always, if there is anything you need, or any suggestions you have, please don't hesitate to let us know!

General Manager

April Course Report

Superintendent Craig Anthony has provided members with a course update covering recent works around the course.

The course staff have been mining native grey dune sand from the back of the northern practice fairway, and between 1, 2, 3, and 18 for the greens replacement program. Approximately 5000m3-6000m3 has been mined so far with approximately 7000m3-8000m3 required for the greens replacement. The sand has been stockpiled on the LHS of the southern practice fairway for future use. The holes will be filled using the organic matter material from the greens replacement, once that work is undertaken.

Tom Power Horan

Spring Valley Member Tom Power Horan capped the best year of his career with an ace and a victory in The National Tournament presented by BMW on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula on Sunday.  Having sewn up DP Tour status a week earlier, Tom had rounds of 68-68-66-67 to finish at -19, one stroke clear of John Lyras.

Fresh of a Pennant victory for Spring Valley, Daniel Beckmann also had an excellent week, with rounds of 69-72-70-66 to finish at -11, in a tie for 10th place.

Congratulations to you both on a great week.

Ollie Battistella

Ollie Battistella who is a cadet member at Spring Valley, has also just completed the US Kids Golf Autumn Tour

After a couple of nail-biting matches, including a tied 2nd with the leader going into the final round, Ollie is set to take out 3rd place which is a wonderful achievement considering this was his first tour.

Ollie has gained tremendous competitive experience from these events, and is looking forward to helping Spring Valley take the extra step in this year's Junior Pennant tournament, after the team suffered a narrow, and devastating loss in the final round in 2022.

Ollie has been taking lessons at Spring Valley on Saturday mornings since age 5, and has had various coaches over this period, providing a terrific focus on different aspects of golf.  After a recent lesson with Marty Joyce,

Ollie is as keen as ever and plans to get out on the course over the coming school holidays, hoping to outdo his older brother Gilbert, who won his first Spring Valley competition at age 13.

Jasper Xu

A number of our Cadet members have been doing wonderful things recently and we are thrilled to highlight the incredible achievement of one of our youngest members, 7-year-old Jasper Xu.

Jasper has recently qualified for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship 2023 in the Age 7 group, an incredible accomplishment for such a young golfer.

Jasper is no doubt thrilled to be participating in such a prestigious event, and he is looking forward to the opportunity to compete against other young golfers from around the world.

We are incredibly proud of Jasper's achievement and believe that he is a shining example of the talent and passion that our young members bring to the sport of golf.

Jasper can be found out practicing most days at Spring Valley Golf Club.

Our Pennant Teams

Our Friday Women are leading the way in their division after three rounds, most recently, securing a win against Patterson River, at Rossdale.

After a week off for Easter,  the next match is on Friday 14th April at Latrobe Golf Club.

club image

Both our Men's and Youth teams are also performing well, both currently sitting in second spot in their respective divisions.

Our Men's team are in action next at Northern on April 16th, and our Youth team are off to Patterson River.

All teams have a real shot at making the final, and moving up a division, which is very exciting - and importantly, all teams would love as much Spring Valley support over the remaining weeks.

Footy Tipping Update

Many have had a tough start to the year, with all the upsets that we have witnessed - but some are showing is how it is done.

One thing that will never change is the weekly reporting from Crocodile Mick - worth the entrance fees alone.

We have a new ladder leader. Gilly Garnham cleverly picked 7 winners to put her just ahead of last week’s leader Alain Tamara. They both have 21 winners after 3 rounds, which is an amazing result after we have had so many upsets. The average SVGC score is 15.

Happy tipping to all. Things must settle down soon. Don't forget 20 weeks is a long time in footy.

it was a great weekend golfwise, weatherwise and for cementing the great camaraderie between these two clubs.  The feedback on our club, course, hospitality and staff was, to a man, exceptional – the Grange boys were very impressed.
