And a battle it was as the team not only had to contend with the extreme elements all day, but Patterson River were not rolling over and played like they haven’t played all season. We couldn’t help but wonder how they were on the bottom of the ladder as they certainly didn’t play like a bottom team on the day. Half our girls were down at the turn and several of the matches were very tight all day. It could have gone either way. But the team dug deep and finished with a heart stopping 4/3 win. Thereby booking our place in the final and guaranteeing our promotion into Division 3 for next year. Yippee!

Heather Cadwallader found it tough on the front nine as she was playing good golf, but her opponent was in great form and Heather just couldn’t get ahead. She came into the turn 3 down and was feeling a bit dejected. But then Heather is the comeback queen! She took the 10th hole and as her opponent’s game began to crumble Heather took full advantage of the situation and put her foot down taking 7 consecutive holes on the back nine finishing the match with a resounding 4/2 victory. Well done Heather, what a fantastic comeback.

Jan Pitcher was playing some good golf, but her chipping deserted her on the day and she was in all sorts of trouble around the greens.Jan hung in there though and still managed to finish 1 up bringing in win no. 2 for the team. Good one Jan.

Lyn Treloar had a real battle on her hands as the match was very tight all day and could have gone either way. Every time I checked in on her the score was ‘all square’. But Lyn is a seasoned match player so after a quick massage on 14 to keep warm, as by then it was so cold we were keeping an eye out for penguins, Lyn continued to take the match on 17 with a 2/1 victory. Go Lyn!

Julie Sheldrake’s match was certainly no walk over. Her opponent was hitting a very good ball and had a great caddie on the bag and was giving Julie a real ‘run for her money’. Julie found herself 4 down after the 13th but with some encouragement from the spectators pressed on taking the 14th, 15th and 16th, halving the 17th and taking the 18th to bring the match back to all square. Phew! So, on she went down the 19th , still all square. On the 20th hole Julie did a great drive; the pressure was on though and her second shot was a bit wobbly and ended up on the righthand side of the fairway. Luckily her opponent’s second shot ended up in the ‘sprouts’ on the left of the green and we just knew she wouldn’t get out of there well. This was now the make or break shot, Julie took her time and like a real pro lofted a beautiful shot over the bunker onto the green. To the cheers and great relief of the onlookers Julie won the match on the 20th giving the Spring Valley team that much needed 4th win. What a legend Julie.

Marg Willcox usually such a steady player found her game was just ‘a bit off’ as her ball wanted to head left for much of the day. Marg found herself 2 down after the 13th but knowing full well every match counted she fought on, but it just wasn’t quite to be, and Marg finished 1 down on the 18th.

Carol Angland ever the steady player on her home course came back into the team at no. 2 this week. Carol and her opponent traded holes all day. Every time I checked in with her she was 1 down, so very much in touch and in with a chance. It was just not to be though as her opponent pushed ahead in the last few holes to take the match 3/1.

Pam Wheelens stepped up to no. 1 spot for the team this week. Pam had a tough match coming from behind for most of the day. She was 3 down on the 13th but with some encouragement from the supporters and drawing on her years of pennant experience she pushed on getting the match to the 17th. Unfortunately, that is where Pam’s day ended with her opponent taking the match 2/1.

Well done team what a great effort by everyone. A very big thank you to the spectators who braved the freezing conditions to give us some much-appreciated support, and of course to the caddies who help make it all happen every week.

We are off to compete in the finals on Friday 11th May at Woodlands 8am off the 1st tee and would love to see some friendly faces. Until next week.

Joanne Dysdale

Team Manager

Not much to report this week folks except, WE WON!!!!
