Our Friday Women had a massive win against ladder leaders Sandhurst a special thanks to the team who got a fantastic picture together (see below). The Sunday Women put in a great display but came up a little short, they will be playing at home this Sunday starting at 11:30am so feel free to come down and show some support.

Please see below for the Team Manager’s Reports.

Friday Women’s Pennant Report 13/04

Spring Valley vs Sandhurst Rd 4

This week the team took on Sandhurst, who were undefeated and sitting on top of the ladder. We knew we had a challenge on our hands, but the team rose to the occasion and, to Sandhurst’s surprise, we came home with a resounding 7/0 victory. We have now moved up to equal 2nd on the ladder.

Jan Pitcher started slowly losing the first 2 holes but quickly found here swing and responded by winning the next 4 holes and turning 2 up. She increased her lead on the second nine only to have her opponent respond by scrambling well. Jan took back control of the match bringing home a 2 up win. A great start to the day.

Lyn Treloar made excellent putts on the first 2 holes to quickly grab the lead. However, her opponent fought back, and Lyn turned 1 down. Pars on the long par 5’s enabled Lyn to regain the lead. Then a ‘miracle’ occurred on the 5th par 3. Lyn’s tee shot skimmed the lake, rebounded off the bank, cleared a series of humps and ended up on the green. A ‘hard earned’ par meant Lyn was now 2 up. Lyn gamely held on, finishing 1 up to bring in the 2nd win of the day.

After Patty Carlson’s great debut win last week at no. 6 she was back in the team and was promoted to no. 5. Patty’s summation of the match was ‘I didn’t play well’ and John Carlson, her caddie commented that ‘it wasn’t pretty’ but as we all know there is no space on the score card for pictures. Patty must have played well enough as she came in with a 1 up win. Our 3rd win for the day. Well done Patty, that is 2 for 2.

Julie Sheldrake’s opponent was a long hitter, but she could be a bit wayward. Initially holes were traded back and forth, but Julie managed to turn 1 up. Unfortunately, Julie then lost 4 holes in a row to go 3 down. However, the match turned dramatically again as Julie played some stunning golf winning the next 4 holes. They squared the 18th giving Julie a 1 up win. A bit ‘touch and go’ but win number 4 in the bag.

After a loss on the first hole Margaret Willcox picked up her game to win the next seven holes with pars on 11,12 and 13 followed by a birdie on 14. The shot of the day however was on the 16th after her tee shot left her under the trees. With nerves of steel and of course encouragement from her caddie Linda Wilson she hit a superb lofted shot aiming way right of the pin allowing the blustery wind to take it back to within 3 feet of the pin. A solid putt followed and yet another par.
Her consistent play continued resulting in an impressive 5/3 win. Well done Marg bringing in win number 5 for the team.

Pam Wheelens’ caddie Terri Farrell reported that Pam ‘flew the barriers’ to be 4 up after 4 and 5 up after 6. Then her opponent came back strongly with a birdie and a couple of pars, but Pam still turned a very strong 3 up. The match was much tighter on the back 9. Pam’s opponent won 3 holes with good pars, both parred the 18th with Pam winning the match 1 up. Another tight match but this gave the team win number 6.

Shirley Munro’s opponent started strongly finding her way around the greens very well and making some good putts. Shirley found herself 3 down early in the match but rallied taking back some holes going into the turn 1 up. They halved many of the holes on the back nine, but Shirley hung onto the lead and she went into the 18th 1 up. After both players found themselves in the trees with tricky chip shots to get out of trouble they halved the hole giving Shirley the final win of the day, 1 up.

Well done team, what a great effort. Also, a big thanks to the caddies who diligently come every week to support the players.

Next week the team are off to take on Medway at Ranfurlie. Fingers crossed we can go back to back and bring home another win.

Joanne Drysdale

Women’s Pennant Report 15/04

Spring Valley V Yarra Yarra Rd 5

In blustery, showery conditions at Kew the team were hopeful of regaining some momentum against the second placed Yarra Yarra line up.

Apart from Cec’s opponent everyone else felt like they were matched against their daughter, however experience does count, and Sue Semmens with Patty Carlson on her bag this week recorded an exceptional 5/4 win.

Erica led 2 up with two holes to play, then found herself battling it out on the 20th hole. With her opponent finding the bunker on the par 3, Erica played a fine 7 iron into the middle of the green and safely secured victory.

Unfortunately those 2 matches were the only highlight for the day as Spring Valley was defeated 5/2.

Thanks to Joanne Drysdale who again deputised as team manager and to Shirley Munro who has played fearlessly in the No. 2 position for the past 3 matches.

Next Sunday we face ladder leaders Royal Melbourne at Spring Valley, teeing off at 11.30am. Getting to the pointy end of the season anticipating a great match as Sandhurst had suffered their first loss for the season the previous week, but we had the home ground advantage !!

Following on from the “ mildly inclement” weather of Saturday the drizzle held off until the finish of the first hole then continued for the whole day. Our batting order: – Luca working towards his 1st win shaped up at No 5, Sid back from a win in the junior tournament at Royal Melb. Playing No 4. Niv playing at No 3, Dennis in No 2 Spot and Andrew playing No 1 pitched against Sandhurst’s Gun!!

Sandhurst fielded their top team as was expected – their longest handicapper was 4 – one in the plus range, we had our work cut out.

Home ground knowledge saw Luca turn 1 down, finding the right fairway this week was helping his game, Sid struggling at 3 down, Niv playing his normal game and 5 up, Dennis 1 up and Andrew 2 down. So, we are in there and fighting!!!!

With the wet conditions and slow play the matches seemed to be a stop star affair, very hard to get a rhyme going and playing against Sandhurst you need to be on top of your game.

Sid and Niv were the first to finish. Sid going down 5/4 and Niv smiling and winning 6/5 another scalp on his belt. Luca is fighting but running out of hole and eventually goes down 4 and 2.

Dennis is having a great tussle with his match neve varying by more than a hole either way and fights to being 1 up after 17, Pressure mounting sees his drive pushed on the 18th and being caught by the bunker, his opponent drives well setting up an 8 iron into the green, Dennis has nothing to lose so desperately tries to hit the green but again catches front right bunker and his opponent plays to the heart of the green. Dennis manages a bogey and comes away with a halved match – well done!!!!

Meanwhile Andrew undefeated all season is finding that players with a plus .4 hcp can play golf!!! We all know the saying “the wheels fell of my buggy” well Andrews head fell off his driver on the 15th!!!! – Actually, he drove to the centre of the green on the 15th – the centre of the 13th green that is !! and driver is done!!

Battling from that point Andrew finishes 3 and 1 with a great fighting effort again a great job done

So, although we went down 3 ½ to 1 ½ we were playing the standout team of our division.

This week we journey down to picturesque Sandhurst golf Course to do battle against Cheltenham. We currently sit 5th on the ladder with Cheltenham in 3rd position but only half a match difference, a win this week will assure us staying up in Divvy 4 so the pressure will be on.

If you would like to see some great golf please come and support our players as the weather is expected to be excellent – we would love to see you there

Steve Adams

Team Manager

For all pennant information and results visit Golfvic

[29,7

post-9495","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-guests-news","category-latest-news
["GET
