Please see below for the Team Manager’s Reports.

Friday Women’s Pennant Report 23/03

Spring Valley vs Box Hill

In Round 2 the team took on Box Hill at Box Hill. Always a bit of a daunting task taking on a team on their home turf. Narrow fairways and very quick, difficult to read greens, made for a challenging day. The team battled it out doing the best they could, but it was not to be their day and they finish down 6/1.

Heather Cadwallader was off to a great start 2 up after 2 holes. Her chipping let her down on the 6th but she managed to turn 1 up. Fooled by the lush looking greens she promptly lost 2 holes in a row. She continued to battle on but went down 2/1.

Jan Pitcher was off to a good start and was 1 up after 4 holes. The narrow fairways took their toll on 5, 6 and 7 and Jan found herself 2 down. Jan fought her way back to 1 down but her opponent made a few good up and downs moving further ahead. After a challenging match Jan was defeated 3/2.

Katie Pang started off well winning the first hole and the match was all square after four holes. But Katie couldn’t quite find her groove on the next five holes and found her ball in a few unexpected places on (and off) the narrow fairways bringing her into the turn 5 down. Katie fought back winning 10 and 11, the highlight of her day was sinking a beautiful long putt on the two tier 11th green, but she couldn’t maintain the momentum and was defeated 5/4.

Julie Sheldrake traded holes back and forth with her opponent early in the match. Her opponent’s course knowledge, especially on the greens, saw Julie 2 down by the 10th hole. Julie fought back, nailing some great putts to bring the match all square on the 18th. They squared the 19th, but an unlucky chip on the 20th left Julie with a difficult putt and she finished 1 down on the 20th hole.

After a shaky shot on the 1st tee Marg Willcox got herself on track and played some good golf to turn 2 up. She then proceeded to lose the 10th and 11th but her long straight drives and accurate shots into the green enabled her to take the match 3/2. Well done, Marg bringing in a win for the team.

The story of Pam Wheelens match was ‘who putted the best’ and unfortunately for Pam the result says it all. Pam and her opponent halved the first 2 holes, her opponent took the next 3, Pam bounced back to win a couple of holes but couldn’t maintain the momentum and turned 3 down. Several holes were then halved but Pam was unable to get an advantage and lost on the 15th.

In the words of Lesley Meadowcroft’s caddie Patty Carlson ‘she struggled with nature on the front nine’. Lesley found her game on the back nine though and played some lovely holes. Unfortunately, she couldn’t gain an advantage over her opponent and was defeated 4/3.

The team all put in a great effort, but sadly it just wasn’t their day.

After a break over Easter the team will be heading off to Patterson River to take on Cheltenham on Friday 6th April.

Joanne Drysdale

Women’s Pennant Report

Spring Valley V Kew

Well, well, well. Round 3 and a match up against the top of the table and undefeated team in Kew. Team manager Alison Miller was more than a bit nervous as the starting time approached and I mentioned to her, don’t forget they’ll be just as nervous. We haven’t lost either. So in an epic 1 v 3 match up out our girls went.

First out was sweet swinging Cec Pezet and she was engaged in an epic duel all day. From all accounts Cec hit the ball straight all day and putted really well, so her opponent must have been serving up the same sort of game. 1 down at the turn, Cec dug deep and managed to hold out her opponent for a fantastic one up win on the last in front of a very enthusiastic bunch of Spring Valley members. Great job Cec.

Next out was the ever reliable Rosemary McQuade. The only problem was caddie Jan Kreymborg forgot to wake her up and she was 3 down after 3. In typical fashion Rosemary fought back and with the front 9 going without a half she turned only one down. The second 9 was equally as tight and when they came to 18 out little champ was still trailing by one. She rectified that with a 35 foot putt on the super fast green that moved the hole 3 inches towards the clubhouse. A birdie to square the match after 18. With wind in her sails, Rosemary went down 19 but an errant bunker shot after her opponent chipped to about 6 inches cost her the match. A fantastic effort all the same.

Erica Kreymborg took back her normal role at number 5 and was up against a very good opponent. All square at half way thanks to some terrific scrambling by Erica and then a brilliant back 9 got her to 2 up with 2 to play. A loss on 17 after facing an impossible downhill putt made things tight up 18. A drive into trouble and then a chip out made the match even tighter, but then a fantastic chip put the pressure back on her opponent. A bogey 5 was enough to to halve the last and we’ve got 2 wins in the bag.

Thankfully the weather had cooled before captain Hayley Peters went out. Her game is so hot at the moment she’s banned from playing on total fire ban days. After last weeks 6/5 victory it was more of the same this week. Her shell shocked opponent admitted to me after the game that Hayley didn’t play a bad shot and didn’t miss a putt in the 13 holes played. To add to the impressive effort she’s doing it while playing injured as well. Great stuff Hayley.

Next out was Sue Semmens. It was probably fair to say that neither Sue or her opponent were in great form early on but Sue was doing enough to consistently win holes and was 4 up after 6 which included a brilliant birdie on the very tough par 3, 15th – our 6th for the day. Then then wheels off. A loss on the next despite her opponent having an airy and a duffed shot and then 2 holes later putting into a bunker caused caddie Phelan Poorly to declare that “any more of this rubbish and you’ll be walking back to the club house in the nude”. With a good number of spectators on hand it was just the incentive that Sue needed. A great par on the par 3, 6th put her one up and then she delivered big time on the penultimate hole by putting a impossible bunker shot from about 30 out to gimme distance for the match. That made it 4 wins and that as they say is good enough for victory.

Shirley Munroe filled in for Tiana while she’s undertaking a well earned break after winning the club championship and had a battle on her hands from the start. It was never going to be an easy task coming in at number 2 and then watching your opponent hit it well past you but Shirley stuck at the task all day before going down to a better opponent on the day. It was always going to gee a huge task Shirley but the whole team really appreciated the effort you put in.

Last out for Spring Valley was Helen Noble and she described her match as starting well and then going backwards the further the match went on. That’s probably not giving due regard to her opponent who played brilliantly and from all accounts is now looking to the U.S for a golfing scholarship. No doubt Helen will bounce back next round with a victory.

It’s fair to say that our girls are going to get some really tough match ups in division 2 but it’s a team game. Winning. 4 matches is enough each week and that’s 3 weeks in a row that the girls have delivered. Undefeated in division 2 and a weeks break for Easter to freshen up before taking on the next challenge.

Well done to all the players caddies and the fantastic members who came out to support the team this week.

We’re on a roll.

Cheers

Phelan Poorly

Men’s Pennant Report

Spring Valley V Goonawarra.

You Beauty! We got a WIN!

After a great win by the Colt’s, the Big Boys headed out against Goonawarra

Simmo got off to a good start and held the lead all day getting up 3/2.

Lucas hit off next and couldn’t get things happening, fought out a 3/1 loss.

Captain Buck struck trouble early with his first tee shot getting plugged on the bunker, he got his nose in front but couldn’t maintain it. A 1down loss.

Wayne headed out minus a caddy, saying he could do it alone! And he did, a great 4/3 win.

Matty struck trouble early with his first tee shot going out of bounds. He rallied and was 2 down with 2 to play finally losing 1 down.

Greg also struck trouble on the 1st, then shifted in to overdrive and cruised home 2/1.

Craig found out he was playing their Club Champ at 1. After witnessing the best up and downs ever seen their Champ had no answers. The match finished 5/4 Craig’s way and his opponent was still shaking his head wondering what happened.

The 4/3 win put’s us in 5th spot level with Kooringal who we play next.

Well done to everyone and thanks to the Caddies.

Steve Ellis

Team Manager

Colt’s Pennant Report

Spring Valley V Rossdale

Team placings :- Niv playing No 1. Luca playing well but from behind.

Andrew playing No 3. Strolls over and asks “ have you a 54 degree in your boot- left mine at home ! He borrows one from the golf shop – all set – As always on the fairway is the game, Andrew plays great golf and turns 5 up.

Aryan coming of his narrow defeat just smiles and stares down the fairway, after 3 is 3 down, slips up a cog and puts the head down. and turns square. Great fightback and walking confidently.

Niv elevated to No 1 again after his big win in the wind at Riversdale comes up against their No 1. Harry said to say Hello to all his old mates!!!!

Sid steadies and closes his match out 4 and 3 and is very happy with himself considering his second rate caddie – well done Sid.

Luca meanwhile drops another one and is 2 down going into the 12th – fighting hard but goes down 3 and 2 – might have been Jet Lag we will see.

Andrew drops the 10th halves the 11th and then applies the throttle and closes out 4 and 2 – great job again and is assuming the “quiet assassin role” another great round Andrew.

Aryan square at the turn goes BANG and closes his match out at 5 and 4 and settles back to support Niv.

Niv battling at the turn gets one back and is playing great golf, but as we know birdies win holes as a rule in the No 1 position. Continues to play good golf but runs out of holes and succumbs 5 and 3 – if a few close putts had fallen and the pressure transferred the result could have been far different.

Final wash-up we walk away with a hard fought 3/2 win which places us at 4th on the ladder but 3rd,4th and 5th are all equal.
