Spring Valley were playing Metropolitan

With Marilyn not available, Sue Pearson was called into the Team, with Elly on the bag. The 1st hole didn’t go to plan, with Sue’s opponent sinking a long putt for a par and a win. The trend continued, with Sue losing 3 holes in a row. Not looking forward to the next hole, where Sue had to give a shot, a squared hole was a good result. A win followed, and some squared holes. With Sue’s direction and short game a bit erratic (some brilliant, some dreadful), after 9 holes she was 4 down. A win on the 10th might have been the start of a turn-around, but it wasn’t to be. Two unplayables off the 12th tee (don’t tell anyone!) was the low point of the day. Squared holes after that wasn’t good enough to recover, with Sue’s opponent winning 5/4.

Wendy Van Bakel played number 2. The day started with some nerves off the 1st tee by both ladies resulting in a halved hole, with Wendy still showing some nerves and losing the 2nd. As the day moved on, halved holes were had with wins and loses by both ladies resulting in the match being all square on the turn. The back nine saw the opposition win 3 straight holes leaving Wendy an uphill battle. Wendy managed to win 1 more hole but ended up losing 3 and 2.

Ha Pham played her first ever Interclub match play event so it was quite challenging. I was two down after 9 holes then I won the 10th, 11th and got back to square. We were up down and were square at the 15th. At hole 16th I was 3 on and my opponent 5 on. I got a beautiful long putt in and was 1 up at 16th. Hole 17th, a Par 3, I chose to play safe by laying up on the fairway. My opponent went for the green and ended over the back. She hit a good putt close to pin and won and we were square again. Unfortunately I lost the 18th to lose the match.

Fairlie and her opponent, Louisa, played shot for shot onto the first green, where Fairlie resting closer to the hole was looking good. Louisa then confidently sunk a long-range putt and Fairlie commented, “OMG, I’m playing the putting queen!” First hole to Louisa. The rest of the front nine was tightly contested with both players playing consistently, trading wins or squaring until the par 3 – 8th hole where Louisa had a shot on Fairlie which she capitalized on. Louisa took the momentum on to win the 9th and was 1 up on the turn. On the back nine Fairlie played great straight drives and employed strategies of laying up short to control her shots onto the green. Her opponent Louisa, however, found too many bunkers. This resulted in Fairlie going 4 up by the 14th hole, then squaring the 15th to win the match 4/3. The match was playing in great spirit and enjoyed by both players and caddies. Congrats Fairlie on your great play for a well-deserved win.

Playing at number 5 was Janet Hardiman with Feirn on the bag. Her opponent was a long hitter so Janet had to minimise her mistakes and rely on her putting. First hole went to Matro and Janet responded to take the 2nd and went on to play an excellent front 9 to be 2 up at the turn. The 10th and 11th went to Metro then Janet again answered with a win on the 12th with a one putt for a great par and 13th also went to Janet. Things were looking good but a few putts missed and Metro got a shot back. With 2 holes to play the pressure was mounting and Janet found a bunker on the 17th whilst her opponent was on with a par putt. The 18th also went to Metro so the match was squared. A tight finish!

So the day went against Spring Valley going down 1.5 to 3.5. Next week we play Rossdale at Huntingdale.

On a beautiful crisp but still morning everyone was chirpy and ready to play.
