Harry Marks; Where do you start to try and describe the impact he has had on so many for so long? A loveable rogue. A loyal friend. A person with a thousand stories and jokes.<\/p>\n

Anyone who knows Harry knows a man who simply makes them feel better.<\/p>\n

Harry joined Spring Valley Golf Club on 1 June 1964 from Lakeside Golf Club with a group of close friends. This marked the beginning of his 60 years of continuous membership. At 93 years of age (turning 94 in March), Harry has contributed to virtually every aspect of the club.<\/p>\n

His quick yet rhythmic swing has served him well, leading to victories in major Board events over many decades, including: \u2022 1973 Philip Courtney Trophy with Harold Vessey \u2022 1982 Men’s Foursomes Championship with cousin Wayne Aigner \u2022 2007 Spring Valley Cup (at age 77) with great friend Steve Foulds \u2022 Captain\u2019s Trophy \u2022 Monthly Medals \u2022 Monthly Tankard \u2022 And numerous daily competitions<\/p>\n

In 1973, he represented the Club in the Men\u2019s pennant, as evidenced by a photo displayed in the stairwell leading to the locker room. Notably, he secured victory in his match during the final, contributing to another flag for the Club. Surprisingly, this was his only year of pennant as a player, but he remained committed and caddied for many years. His motivational speeches were always jovial yet effective in rallying players for upcoming games.<\/p>\n

Harry was inherently competitive and relished winning. Prior to his Foursomes Championship victory, he even made a bet with a close friend who doubted his ability to win. A convincing 4\/3 victory was followed by a delivery of a dozen balls the next day, marking another sweet victory.<\/p>\n

Harry\u2019s dedication extended beyond the course, as he served on the General Committee (now Board) and Match Committee for many years.<\/p>\n

His stories of the club’s early days are both memorable and entertaining. The tale of the ‘greased piglet’ at a barn dance-themed dinner in the original clubhouse behind the pine trees on the 11th hole is often shared with new members.<\/p>\n

At 93, Harry has faced some health challenges and appears to have likely retired from playing golf. However, he continues to frequent the club for lunches and recently attended the annual presentation evening to receive his 60-year bag tag and medal.<\/p>\n

A proud former student of Prahran Technical School, Harry’s journey from humble beginnings, where he initially doubted his eligibility for membership (despite frequently playing as a guest), to becoming a beloved character of our club is remarkable. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Harry for choosing to join us. We have cherished every moment of this journey as much as he has.<\/p>\n

The next time Harry visits the club, extend a handshake, buy him a drink, and express gratitude for his presence. And, of course, don’t miss the opportunity to ask him for a few more captivating stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
