{"id":11395,"date":"2019-01-15T20:00:10","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T09:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.springvalleygolf.com.au\/cms\/?p=11395"},"modified":"2023-06-20T17:48:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T07:48:42","slug":"qld-tyro-makes-ausam-mark-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.springvalleygolf.com.au\/cms\/qld-tyro-makes-ausam-mark-women\/","title":{"rendered":"6 under (68) shares the lead in Women&#8217;s AusAm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Article taken from: Golf Australia\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, history is made during the final round of a tournament, but for Lion Higo, round one of the 2019 Australian Women\u2019s Amateur turned into a day she will never forget.<\/p>\n<p>Higo, who turns 16 next weekend, fired a personal best six-under-par 67 at the picturesque Woodlands Golf Club to set the lead after the first of two days of stroke play qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>Seven birdies in her opening 12 holes paved the way for the Emerald Lakes member to set a new course record.<\/p>\n<p>But, when play at nearby Spring Valley wound up, the only thing splitting Lion Higo and Sae Ogura from the shared lead was their World Rankings \u2013 all 1311 places of it.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s Ogura, who finished T4 in the stroke play last year, produced an equally brilliant 68 to match Higo\u2019s morning pace.<\/p>\n<p>But Higo will have an extra advantage up her sleeve when she crosses over to Spring Valley tomorrow after playing the Victorian Junior Masters at the same course only two weeks ago when she finished outright sixth.<\/p>\n<p>And after remarkably one-putting the her first six holes, Higo is hoping to go even lower tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the practice rounds I thought the greens were pretty firm and all my iron shots were running off,\u201d Higo said with a huge grin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday wasn\u2019t too bad with the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Queenslander was so engrossed in her round, she didn\u2019t even realise her score until afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Higo only learned of her lead and course record from her father, her caddie, after the final hole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s actually my personal best, so I\u2019m pretty happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the tournaments that you are allowed a caddie, I get him to caddie.
